Measuring & Fitting Guide

Measuring & Fitting Guide

Welcome to the Floor2Door Measuring & Fitting Guide. Whether you’re choosing a new carpet or refreshing your home with vinyl flooring, measuring correctly is an important first step.

Our guide will help you understand what to measure, what to consider before ordering and how to prepare for your new flooring.

How to Measure a Room for Carpet

  1. Draw a simple sketch of your room, including any alcoves, doorways or recesses.

  2. Measure the length and width of the room in metres.

  3. Measure into any alcoves or additional areas that need flooring.

  4. Write each measurement clearly on your sketch.

  5. Allow for the room layout and the direction the carpet will run.

Important: Carpet is supplied in set roll widths, commonly 4m and 5m. The total square metres alone may not tell you how much carpet you need, as the layout and joins can affect the quantity required.

If you’re unsure, seek professional measuring advice before placing your order.

How to Measure Stairs for Carpet

Stairs need careful measuring to ensure the carpet fits correctly.

  • Count the number of steps and include any landings.

  • Measure the depth of each tread and the height of each riser.

  • Measure the width of the stairs.

  • Note any turns, winders or unusual shapes.

  • Include any adjoining landing that also needs carpeting.

Stairs can be tricky to calculate, so professional measuring is recommended to help avoid ordering too little or too much carpet.

Measuring for Vinyl Flooring

Before ordering vinyl, sketch the room and measure its longest length and widest point.

  • Measure the length and width in metres.

  • Measure alcoves and recesses separately.

  • Include doorways and any connected areas that need covering.

  • Check the required roll width and consider where joins may fall.

Irregularly shaped rooms may need to be divided into smaller sections when measuring. Remember that the layout of the vinyl and the roll width can affect the quantity required.

Choosing Your Carpet and Underlay

The right flooring can transform a room. When choosing your carpet, consider the room it will be used in, the level of foot traffic, the feel you want underfoot and the colour that best suits your home.

Underlay can improve comfort and help your carpet perform as intended. Always check that your chosen underlay is suitable for your carpet and the intended installation.

Professional Measuring and Fitting

Accurate measurements are essential, but they are not a substitute for checking the final flooring layout.

Carpet and vinyl may need to be cut and positioned to suit the room, and stairs or awkward layouts require extra care.

If you’re unsure about measurements, roll widths or fitting requirements, get professional advice before ordering.
